nsyilxcən Language Fluency Programs

In March 2021, the University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBCO) became the first university in Canada to offer a bachelor’s degree in Indigenous language fluency.

This degree is an innovative collaboration between Syilx communities, Nicola Valley Institute of Technology (NVIT), En’owkin Centre, and UBCO to sustain and revitalize language traditions, restore language competence, and protect the knowledge of Indigenous communities.

The Bachelor of Nsyilxcn Language Fluency (BNLF) program stands as a testament to the resilience and dedication of our peoples in reclaiming and revitalizing our ancestral language. It marks a critical step forward in preserving our culture and strengthening our community.

Approved under the University Act of BC, this program’s framework provides a model for Indigenous language revitalization efforts across the province. Moving forward, the BNLF program at UBCO serves as a beacon of inspiration for similar initiatives aimed at preserving and promoting Indigenous languages throughout Canada. It is a testament to the University’s commitment to reconciliation and decolonization, fostering a supportive environment where Indigenous knowledge and languages can thrive.

Structure and Delivery

Years 1–2: Students earn a Certificate and Diploma in Nsyilxcn through NVIT and En’owkin, learning from fluent speakers in community-based immersion settings.

Years 3–4: Students transition to UBC Okanagan to complete the Bachelor’s degree, taught in full immersion—covering advanced language, culture, and academic subjects like sciences and math—all in Nsyilxcn.

First Language Cohort

In June 2023, the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan (UBCO) campus celebrated a significant milestone with the graduation of its inaugural cohort from the Bachelor of nsyilxcən Language Fluency program.

We acknowledge the dedication of the students, faculty, and community members who have contributed to the success of this groundbreaking program. The program reflects a two-decade effort initiated by the Chiefs of the Syilx Okanagan Nation. These collective efforts have not only empowered individuals to become fluent speakers of nsyilxcen, but have also revitalized a language that is integral to our sqilxʷ identity, and the laws embedded in the wisdom of our language.

Nsyilxcen Language Fluency Certificate & Diploma at NVIT

The Nicola Valley Institute of Technology’s (NVIT) Nsyilxcen Language Fluency Certificate & Diploma programs are foundational and innovative programs with a focus on Nsyilxcen content in the language fluency curriculum. Admission is open to all learners within the respective Indigenous communities, particularly those wishing to enhance their knowledge, understanding and conversation ability of Indigenous languages. The program is designed to be delivered year-long through the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters.

Upon successful completion of the Nsyilxcen Language Fluency Certificate and Diploma at NVIT, students can transfer to the University of British Columbia Okanagan in the Bachelor of Nsyilxcen Language Fluency (BNLF).

Note: The variations in the nsyilxcən language arises from the fact that the language is primarily oral, with a relatively recent development of standardized written forms. There are minor variations and spelling differences within the language family, between the regions of Syilx territory. As a result, the ONA strives to ensure that spellings are accurate and consistent; however, they may differ from other spellings you might encounter.
